Quick answer: A smocked clothing business starts with four steps: register a legal entity and tax ID, define how you will reach customers, find a reliable hand smocking manufacturer, and budget for your first stock. A lean start is a few designs from 10 to 30 pieces each, not a large single order.

A smocked clothing business is a boutique, online shop or children’s brand that sells hand-smocked or machine-smocked kids clothing. A smocked clothing business is usually built on a small, seasonal range sold to parents and grandparents who value heirloom craft.

About ⅓ of our customers are planning to open a new store or brand selling smocked garments. And if you are planning to do the same, congratulations, because at least you have done a good job in finding a potential product line. However, not everyone has enough experience and knowledge to do this. Some of the following shares can be important notes to help you succeed in your fashion brand business.

Basically, these are the top concerns when starting a smocked clothing business:

1. How to establish a legal business entity?

1.1. If you are in the US

Every country, state, and city has different requirements when it comes to setting up your business as a legal entity. You can go to the IRS State Government Sites page to check what requirements are necessary for your specific state (if in the US). If you are in a different country then you will need to use a search term such as “legal requirements for setting up a business in [insert country]” to find out what requirements you need to meet to set up your business. Additionally, you can check your local government website for more information.

For this tutorial I’ll be using Washington State (in the US) as an example. In most cases, your location will follow a similar process so this can give you a good idea of where to look and how to start.

  1. FILE FEDERALLY: You will need to apply for an EIN from the IRS. Go to www.irs.gov and choose “Apply for an Employer ID Number”. This page will walk you through the different forms you need to complete. The EIN is like the “social security number” for your business. You will use this to complete the taxes for your business. Here you will choose what type of entity you are setting up: (Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, S-Corporation or C-Corporation). They will determine how you pay taxes and how much you pay. There are other entity types based on your state, but the four listed above are the options for how you are taxed federally. Please check with your Accountant to be sure you understand how your specific state law impacts your federal filing requirements.
  2. FILE WITH THE STATE: Use your newly acquired EIN to request a UBI through your Secretary of State. For Washington, that’s sec.wa.gov – but you can just Google “Secretary of State for [insert state]” to find the information for your state. On this site go to “Corporations” and then find your respective type of business – for this example we’ll us an LLC. Under LLC choose “Certificate of Formation” and fill out the respective form. The UBI that you are given is your Business ID (it may be called something different in your state) and will be used for lots of different applications! If you are receiving a business discount from anywhere, this is what they will ask for. This is your certificate of formation which will include your UBI, the state will then send you a State Business License (in some cases requiring an additional form).
  3. SET UP A BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT: Use your EIN to set up a business bank account. Though it’s not technically necessary, this is the best practice for keeping your personal and business funds separate. To protect both yourself individually and your business it is recommended to keep your finances separate with a business bank account. This is vitally important for both organizational purposes and legal purposes. Most banking institutions offer this service, so do your research and choose a bank that’s right for you!
  4. FILE WITH THE CITY: Use your UBI to register with your city for a City Business License. They will also give you a city Business License ID. Depending on your city, you may also owe city taxes.
  5. YOU ARE NOW A LEGAL BUSINESS!

If you have employees, there are additional items to consider (workers compensation, unemployment, and insurance to name a few) which you can access information for from your government agencies. I won’t be getting into all of that in this tutorial, but your government agencies have tons of resources on this if you need some clarity!

Also, I’d like to note that you may want to (or need to) apply for additional licenses. For example, because I am using materials (fabric, trim, etc.) to create a finished good (clothing) that will then be sold, I am exempt from paying tax on materials that I buy (because the finished good will be taxed). So, I applied for a Reseller Permit. I use this permit with my suppliers who take my permit number to remove any taxation on my purchase of raw materials.

Here’s a breakdown of what it cost me to start my business:

  • Certificate of Formation = $200
  • State Business License = $25
  • SOS (Secretary of State) Initial Report = $30
  • City Business License = $150
  • Total = $405

Also note that your business bank account will require a lump sum to set up and a minimum balance to maintain. I needed to have at least $3,000 to set up my business bank account and I must maintain a $300 minimum balance to remain active. Each banking institution will be different, so take a look around and see what works best for your budget.

1.2. If you are in UK

If you are in UK, here are a few things to consider:

  • Register your small fashion business with Companies House (for limited companies).
  • Register your small fashion business with HMRC.
  • Trademark your small fashion business.

Always be sure to contact your local authority or council to see what the legal requirements are for your business. There’s more help from the UK government about things like registering your business and tax.

2. How to effectively reach your customers (Marketing effectively)

The smocked children’s clothing market is gaining significant attention for its blend of classic style and practical appeal. However, standing out in this competitive field requires a well-crafted marketing strategy. Below are detailed steps to effectively reach your customers and build a successful smocked children’s clothing brand.

2.1. Building a unique brand identity

In the children’s fashion industry, especially with smocked clothing, establishing a unique brand identity is crucial. With numerous brands already in the market, you need to create a distinctive image to capture the attention of parents and stand out from the competition.

How to create a unique brand identity:

  • Brand Story: Develop an engaging story about your brand. This could involve the origin of your smocked designs, your special craftsmanship process, or your commitment to using safe and sustainable materials for children. Share this story on your website, social media, and marketing materials.
  • Signature Designs: Create smocked clothing with unique design elements, colors, and patterns. Ensure that your products are not only visually appealing but also comfortable and safe for children.
  • Consistent Communication: Use a consistent and appropriate communication style that resonates with your target audience, which consists of parents. Make sure your messaging is clear, understandable, and trustworthy.

2.2. The importance of high-quality media

High-quality media is essential for making a strong first impression in the online marketplace. Your product images and videos should reflect the quality and elegance of your smocked clothing.

Effective Media Strategies:

  • High-Quality Images: Invest in professional photography to capture your products with good lighting and creative angles. Highlight the details of your smocked clothing, such as the intricate embroidery and high-quality fabrics. Use images that show the clothing being worn in real-life situations to make the products more relatable.
  • Video Marketing: Create videos that showcase your products, the production process, or the benefits of choosing smocked clothing for children. Videos can be a powerful tool to connect with customers and provide a deeper understanding of your products.
  • DIY vs. Professional Services: You can create media content yourself if you have the necessary skills and equipment. Otherwise, consider hiring a professional service to ensure the highest quality of images and videos.

2.3. Developing a professional website

A well-designed website is crucial for introducing your brand and products to potential customers. It helps build trust and provides detailed information about your smocked clothing.

Benefits of a professional website:

  • Building Trust: A polished and user-friendly website helps customers feel more confident in their purchases. Ensure that your website reflects the quality and style of your brand.
  • Product Management: Provide detailed information about your smocked clothing, including descriptions, sizes, colors, and prices. This helps customers easily find and choose the right products.
  • Choosing a Website Platform: Use platforms like Shopify or WordPress to build your website. These platforms are user-friendly, SEO-friendly, and offer useful tools for website management.

2.4. Leveraging Social Media Channels

Social media is a vital tool for reaching and engaging with your customers. Especially in the children’s fashion industry, social media channels can help you build a community and generate interest in your products.

Social Media Strategies:

  • Create Unique Content: Share posts, images, and videos related to your smocked clothing. Develop engaging content that appeals to parents, such as fashion tips for children or entertaining stories featuring your products.
  • Optimize Algorithms: Understand and apply the algorithms of each social media platform to maximize your visibility. For example, on Instagram, use relevant hashtags and create high-quality content to increase reach.
  • Promotional Campaigns: Use promotional campaigns and discounts to attract attention. Develop special offers or incentives for your social media followers.
  • Hire Experts: If you’re unsure about managing social media, consider hiring a professional to help you create and implement effective marketing strategies.

2.5. Exploring Offline Marketing Strategies

While online marketing is crucial, combining it with offline strategies can offer significant benefits for your brand.

Offline Marketing Strategies:

  • Attend Events: Participate in children’s fashion fairs, exhibitions, and related events to showcase your products and connect with customers in person.
  • Charity Involvement: Engage in charitable activities or sponsor events related to children. This not only helps build a positive brand image but also expands your community connections.
  • Cross-Promotion: Partner with other stores or businesses for cross-promotion. For instance, collaborate with toy stores or childcare experts to introduce your smocked clothing to their customers.

3. Where to find a reputable smocked clothing manufacturer?

Smocked clothing is a handmade product, it will be best if they are produced from countries with high embroidery skills, cheap labor costs such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, China, … However, because China is embargoed in the US, and Bangladesh is affected by civil war, you should exclude these 2 countries.

Cherrysmock will be a good choice for those who are looking for a reputable smocked children’s clothing manufacturer. Because we offer cheap prices and good MOQ (only from 30 pieces per design), it is great for those who start a smocked clothing business.
